How To Make the Gravy

To my surprise, making Mcdonald’s sausage gravy isn’t that hard. You can easily create a batch that can serve 6 to 8 people in just 20 minutes.

To start, you will need to prepare these following ingredients:

Sausage

You will need a pound of pork sausage, preferably pork breakfast sausage. You can easily get this kind of sausage from any supermarket or butcher shop. If you can, do try to get freshly ground pork for best results.

Bacon Grease

Instead of using cooking oil to bring all the flavors of the ingredients together, we will be using bacon grease instead. About 3 tablespoons of bacon grease will be enough to provide you with the right amount of flavor.

If you don’t have any bacon with you, you can always go with 3 tablespoons of lard or 3 tablespoons of shortening.

All Purpose Flour

Ever notice how Mcdonald’s gravy is thick enough to cover the back of a spoon when you dip a spoon in it? The key to attaining that consistency is adding in a little bit of all-purpose flour to the mix. For this recipe, you will only need ⅓ cup of all purpose flour.

Milk

To add a creamy flavor to your gravy, all you have to do is add in 3 cups of milk. You can use any kind of milk for this recipe, but I personally recommend going with whole milk. Whole milk tends to create a creamier feel that other kinds of milk.

Black Coffee

To add color to your gravy, you will need about 2 tablespoons of black coffee. You can use any brand of black coffee that you prefer. Just try to go with something that doesn’t come with sugars and creamers. If you don’t have any black coffee with you, you can also use 1 beef bouillon cube.

However, I don’t really recommend using the beef cube over the black coffee since it can cause your gravy to be a bit overwhelming.

Worcestershire Sauce

Another thing that can help add color and make your gravy get the right consistency is worcestershire sauce. You will only need 1 tablespoon of worcestershire sauce for this recipe. You can easily get worcestershire sauce at your local supermarket.

Take note that worcestershire sauce looks very similar to soy sauce. Do not be fooled into thinking that these 2 ingredients are the same. They are very different since soy sauce is a lot saltier.

Seasoning

To season your gravy, all you will need is 1 teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper. Try to use freshly cracked black pepper and sea salt for this recipe in order to get the best results. However, you can also try using pre-cracked black pepper or iodized salt if you don’t have sea salt or a pepper cracker.

Step By Step Instructions For Making The Mcdonald’s Sausage Gravy

Once you have prepared all of the ingredients that you need, it’s now time to proceed with these following cooking steps:

Step 1: Prepare The Sausage

The first thing you will have to do is cook the pork breakfast sausage. Simply place your pan on your stovetop over medium-high heat. Once the pan is hot enough, place your pork breakfast sausage in the pan and cook it until it gets completely browned.

Avoid overcooking your pork breakfast sausage because you will continue to cook it a little later as you finish cooking the other ingredients.

Once browned, remove your pork breakfast sausage from the pan and set it aside.

Step 2: Create The Sauce Base

After removing your pork breakfast sausage from the pan, keep your stovetop temperature in medium-high heat.

To create your sauce base, add the bacon grease to the pan. If you don’t have bacon grease, you can use lard or shortening.

Stir in the grease inside the pan and adjust your stove’s temperature to medium heat. Once in medium heat, you should now proceed to add the flour to the pan. Stir the flour constantly until it reaches a golden brown color.

Step 3: Make The Sauce Creamy

Once your flour have been cooked, it’s now time to make your gravy creamy. To do so, slowly add the milk into the pan. As you add the milk into the pan, slowly whisk it in until it is thoroughly incorporated with the flour.

Step 4: Add The Rest Of The Ingredients

Once the grease, flour, and milk have been thoroughly mixed, it is now time to add in the rest of the ingredients. Add the sausage, black coffee, worcestershire sauce, pepper, and salt to the pan.

Give the gravy a mix until every ingredient is well incorporated with one another.

Step 5: Thicken Up The Gravy

The last thing you will have to do is thicken up the gravy. To do so, all you have to do is reduce the heat to low and simmer it for about 15 minutes. If 15 minutes has passed and your gravy still hasn’t reached the right consistency, simmer it some more until it does.

Remember to keep stirring the gravy every couple of minutes to ensure even cooking.

What Else Is This Gravy Good For?

If you are a gravy lover, then I’m sure you can easily come up with a list of foods that go well with gravy. If you happen to end up with leftover Mcdonald’s sausage gravy, know that it doesn’t only go well with Mcdonald’s sausage, it actually goes well with these following foods too:

Steak

May your preference be medium rare or well done, a nice slab of steak always go well with good gravy. Try adding some of Mcdonald’s sausage gravy on the side for your next steak meal. It will surely help add a creamy depth to your steak dish.

Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes wouldn’t be complete without gravy if you ask me. In fact, the potatoes don’t even need to be mashed that well at all. You can get a whole boiled or baked potato, cut it into pieces, and simply drizzle it with gravy.

Chicken

Whether you’re eating kentucky fried chicken or plain fried chicken at home, you have got to admit that a piece of fried chicken ultimately goes well with gravy. If you happen to have some buttermilk fried chicken, I suggest you try pairing it with Mcdonald’s sausage gravy. You’ll be surprised as to how these two work well together.

Soup

Did you know that gravy actually makes for a great soup base? Just dilute the gravy with cream or milk and add a little bit more seasoning to balance the whole thing out. If you decide to turn your Mcdonald’s sausage gravy into soup, I suggest you add in some herbs like rosemary and sage. You may also want to try adding in some mushrooms too.
